Pervasive Citizenship

Glitchy timelapse video of sunrise over industrial landscape

With the rise of so-called smart cities and extrastate governing procedures, citizenship is changing. Pervasive Citizenship is a book-length project that examines and explores the possibilities of what Etienne Balibar has termed the “citizen-subject” as that concept has been reshaped by 21st century information regimes. Building on an earlier article, “Pervasive Citizenship through #SenseCommons,” this project ethnographically studies how “smart” or “sentient” cities/governance account for citizens and what citizens are counted against.
